Changing the Dynamics of School Transportation, It Starts With YOU!
Friday April 4, 2025 8:30am - 9:30am MDT
Session Learning and Objectives:
  • Don’t settle for the minimum - Integration for all students with all needs.
  • Driver retention by building relationships and trust.
  • Meeting the State Standard: Clearinghouse, Training, Record Keeping
  • Safety by the numbers.
Session Details:
Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but parenting responsibilities have changed over
the past few decades. The migration of responsibilities and expectations has resulted in
Transportation Specialists being required to not only transport students from home to
school and back, but we have also been tasked with making these trips as counselors,
behavior specialists, medical providers, and safety officers. These changes can be
positive by opening our minds and putting aside the belief that this is just the way it has
always been done. We should look to new and innovative ways to positively change
our industry. We need to learn how to collaborate with our special needs departments,
parents, and district administrations about new best practices and meeting the needs of
students and our bus support team.

As your district’s clerk, you are the custodian of all the district’s documents, records, and reports.  You are also obligated to manage those records in an “orderly and systematic way,” including retaining minutes, complaints, deeds, incoming and outgoing emails, and a ton of other stuff according to specific schedules!
What are your obligations for record retention? What resources are out there to help?

Transportation Issues that Can and DO Affect School Districts
Friday April 4, 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm MDT
Several laws affect school transportation, including state and/or federal laws (Hours of Service, Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, MAP21, including the new ELDT, Driver Training requirements, and Use of NON-approved buses/vehicles for home-to-school or school-to-home routes). It's up to the schools to ensure that they are following the laws correctly. If they aren't, they can lose state reimbursement from OPI and could be subject to state or federal fines (both for the school district and the driver). Presented by Michael Edwards, Harlow's School Bus Services, Stevensville Transportation Manager, Stevensville Public Schools.
